"Think on these things......"

In this excellent New Statesman article https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/society/2026/08/the-shaming-of-jason-arday (click on the link to read it) Dr Rowan Williams - the ex-Archbishop of Canterbury - explains that "A debased media culture and the fever-ridden jungle of online comment are just another iteration of habits deeply rooted in human society-building. We should not deceive ourselves into thinking that we have outgrown any of this.......If we witnessed the systematic bullying of a neurodiverse child in school, we should rightly be appalled and insist on protective strategies being in place. Have we arrived at a point where journalistic ethics expects less than an average primary school would?......"Do not fear the one who can kill the body,” says Christ in the Gospels, "but the one who can destroy body and soul......... The assault on Arday was an assault on his soul".

It's all that needs to be said on the Jason Arday affair. Dr Williams' voice of calm reason and compassion is a voice I would far prefer to listen to than the hacks in the Mail and the Telegraph and the online venomous mob.

Those savaging and mocking the late Jason Arday should pause for thought and remember another of Dr Williams' comments made when he was still Archbishop of Canterbury. He wisely and compassionately said "When I enter into a dialogue with a person from another culture or belief I am not out to change them, convince them that I am right, or secure their agreement with my point of view or belief, I want to understand them." Maybe the world would be a better place if we all sought to understand our fellow humans rather than mercilessly criticising or making ad hominem and dysphemistic attacks on them.

In Philippians 4 St Paul reminds us to "Think on these things": He tells us "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Those responsible for the hounding of Jason Arday would do well to ponder those words and that advice.
